Donald Rowe, a Victoria resident since 2009, is a native of Atlantic Canada and has lived all over Canada.
He is mostly self taught and has studied art as a high school option in the ‘60’s and in subsequent continuing education courses in drawing, painting and art history.
In the early 90’s, he was a member of an artist’s co-op and gallery. Several works were sold through the co-op gallery.
Since retiring as a professional engineer, he has been able to devote more time and work to develop his art including recent completion of painting and drawing courses at VISA (Vancouver Island School of Art) and VCA (Victoria College of Art).
He has exhibited in the juried Sidney Fine Art Show.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My work currently represents local urban outdoor scenes in and about my neighbourhood of downtown Victoria. Water and sky are major elements.
There are 7-billion people in the world and more than half now live in an urban environment. As I walk about my neighbourhood, I see people going about their day to day lives. Sometimes I see something different and interesting than I can represent in a composition to tell a story and/or suggest something is about to happen. I look and paint what I see with acrylic on canvas and produce representational art and realism-like art. Compositions are derived from sketches, memories, photographs and imagination.
